Michael Brenner was born in 1964 and studied History and Jewish Studies at the Institute for Jewish Studies, the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, and Columbia University in New York. He wrote his doctoral thesis on Jewish culture in the Weimar Republic and taught at universities in North America, France and Israel. In 1997 he was made Professor of Jewish History and Culture at the University of Munich.
