Michael Hagner was born in 1960 and studied Medicine and Philosophy at the Free University of Berlin, after which he worked at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and elsewhere. He obtained his second doctorate, the Habilitation, from the Medical Faculty of Göttingen University. He has been a Guest Professor in Salzburg, Tel Aviv and Frankfurt am Main. He has been teaching at the University of Zurich since 2003 and has published widely on the history of science.
