Valentin Groebner was born in Vienna in 1962. He studied in Marburg, Vienna and Hamburg and received his Ph.D. in Bielefeld in 1991. He was assistant in the history department at the University of Basel, where he became a full professor in 1998. Since 1997 he has been co-editor of the journal “Historische Anthropologie” and has held various teaching positions in Switzerland and the USA. He has been professor of medieval and Renaissance history at the University of Lucerne since 2004.
