Katja Lange-Müller, born in 1951, was trained as a typesetter, then worked as a picture editor at Berliner Zeitung. She later worked for a number of years as an auxiliary nurse in a psychiatric ward. In 1979 she began studying creative writing at the Johannes R. Becher Literaturinstitut in Leipzig. She went to Mongolia in 1982 for a one-year study visit. In 1984 she left East Germany for West Berlin, and has lived as a freelance writer in Berlin ever since.
