Rafik Schami was born in Damascus in 1946. In 1970 he emigrated to West Germany and continued his study of chemistry in Heidelberg, where he earned his Ph.D. in 1979. While a student he worked in factories, as a temporary labourer on construction sites, as well as in department stores and restaurants. He also published stories in magazines and anthologies, in Arabic and, beginning in 1977, in German. Schami is considered an important representative of immigration literature in Germany.
