German authors are enjoying increasing popularity in Russia. At least that’s what statistics say – licence sales to Russia have almost doubled since 2010. So it’s reason enough to pinpoint the exact position occupied by German literature in Russia. What is it about German literature that interests Russian readers, what’s strange, what’s alienating? Is the focus on classics or current titles? How has its reception developed through history? What roles are played by advertising and promotion of translation? These themes are discussed by Hanser-Verlag boss Michael Krüger, Goethe-Institut president Klaus-Dieter Lehmann, as well as literature professor and translator Maria Zorkaja and literary critic Alexei Mokrousov.
