20.03.2016, 1:00 PM - 1:30 PM The arabic Kafka –Kafka’s allure in the arab world
Leipzig
Gutleutstraße 8-12
60329 Frankfurt am Main
Franz Kafka is one of the most influential writers of the 20th century. Today the word “Kafkaesque” refers not only to Kafka’s literary landscape. What is it about Kafka’s work and person that fascinates Arab readers, what role do his texts play in the cultural and Arabic-speaking world? Has the reception of Kafka changed since the Arab Spring? Can one speak of a Kafka boom in recent years, given that Kafka's entire oeuvre has been retranslated and published in Arabic since the beginning of the millennium and Reiner Stach’s 3-volume Kafka biography is currently being translated into Arabic? The German Studies scholar and translator Hebatallah Fathy (Cairo) and Abdo Abboud, Professor of Comparative Literature (Damascus / Munster) will discuss the current reception of this (Jewish) author and his work in the Arab world.
