22.03.2017, 7:00 PM A Recurring Story: People Forced to Flee
Cairo
Not since the end of World War II, have so many people worldwide been forced to flee their homelands. Despite the decades that lie between the refugees of the Second World War and the current flow of refugees, they share many similarities: the traumatic experience of fleeing and the hope of a better life. Based on reports from refugees, as well as personal experiences, the authors Barbara Warning (Hamburg) and Rasha Omran (Damascus / Cairo) discuss the fate of people forced to leave their homelands for a wide range of reasons.
Barbara Warning (b.1962, Munich) lives as a freelance journalist and author in Hamburg. She studied history and English and worked as an editor at various German daily newspapers for many years. She will read from her two recent books, which focus on fleeing and migration: „Kindheit in Trümmern" [Shattered childhoods] and „Heimisch und doch fremd".
In her non-fiction work, "Shattered childhoods," 21 people talk about their childhood and adolescence between the end of the war and the economic miracle. Litrix.de offers financial support for the Arabic translation of the book within the current focus on the Arabic world (2015-2017).
Rasha Omran (b. 1964, Tartus, Syria) was expelled from Syria because of the war and is currently living in Cairo. Five volumes of poems by Rasha Omran have been published to date. She also writes weekly columns for Arabic-language newspapers and media.
