Jenny Erpenbeck, born 1967 in East Berlin, began a course in Theatre Studies at the Humboldt University in Berlin, then transferred in 1989 to the Hanns Eisler School of Music in Berlin, where she studied Musical Theatre Direction. In the 1990s she began writing alongside her work as a stage director, producing novels as well as plays for both stage and radio; her work has been translated into more than thirty languages. She lives in Berlin.
