Gerhard Höpp was born in 1942 in Berlin and died there in 2003. He graduated in Arabic Studies and Islamic Studies at the Karl Marx University, Leipzig, and subsequently joined the teaching staff. In 1975 he began working at the East German Academy of Sciences. From 1992 on he worked at the Centre for Modern Oriental Studies (ZMO) in Berlin, which he helped establish in the course of the 1990s.
