Aufbau Verlag

The Aufbau imprints constitute one of the last independent publishing houses still operating in the German-speaking countries, and mostly form part of the not-for-profit foundation ‘Kommunikationsaufbau’, which means that their financial independence and their freedom to publish what they want is guaranteed long-term. Their origins lie in the Aufbau Verlag, which was founded in East Berlin in 1945, and which absorbed additional imprints following the emergence of the new Federal ‘Länder’ after 1989: Rütten and Loening and the aufbau taschenbuch verlag in 2006, Blumenbar in 2011, Edition Braus in 2019, the Christoph Links Verlag in  2020, and Die andere Bibliothek in 2021. Through its books, e-books (‘aufbau digital’) and audiobooks (‘aufbau audio’), the Aufbau imprints discover new literary talents and publish literature from across the world whilst also providing entertainment and provoking debates. The group has been based since 2011 in the ‘Aufbau Haus’ on Berlin’s Moritzplatz, a creative hub in the heart of Kreuzberg that brings together both culture and the creative industries.
