Klett-Cotta Verlag
The Klett-Cotta Verlag’s book and periodicals lists cover a broad range of topics, from literature and fantasy through general-interest non-fiction, history, politics and philosophy and all the way through to psychotherapy, psychoanalysis, psychology and education. The two names Klett and Cotta stand for two traditional strands that were fused together when the company was re-established in 1977. Cotta, founded in 1659 and the pre-eminent publisher throughout the era of German classicism, stands for the great tradition of German classicism as established under the publishing aegis of Johann Friedrich von Cotta, the publisher of Goethe, Schiller and other luminaries. The other strand harks back to the publishing venture that Ernst Klett developed between 1936 and 1976. Its range is strikingly broad, embracing modern classics and contemporary works as well as international belles-lettres. Literary fantasy is covered in its Hobbit Presse imprint. Its non-fiction list concentrates chiefly on the fields of history and society, and psychology and psychoanalysis are also focal points on the non-fiction side. In January 2018 the traditional brand Klett-Cotta absorbed the Tropen imprint and the specialist non-fiction publisher Schattauer.
