Hinstorff Verlag

Founded in 1831, the Hinstorff Verlag stands today as one of the leading publishers in northern Germany. With more than 450 titles currently available and an annual output of some 40 new publications, it offers a plethora of entertainment and solid information. Local literature has always figured large at the Hinstorff Verlag, with Low German literature having featured in its assortment since the era of Fritz Reuter. Belles-lettres have also been part of the assortment from the company’s very earliest days. Authors such as Jurek Becker, Klaus Schlesinger and Ulrich Plenzdorf have all been published by Hinstorff, and books by Franz Fühmann, one of Germany’s pre-eminent post-war authors, have been regularly published there. As regards non-fiction, Hinstorff presents books on the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern region and on other, largely northern Bundesländer. Its areas of specialisation include lexica, books on regional and cultural history and folklore, travel guides and books on nature, gardening and cooking.
Maritime books have been part of the Hinstorff assortment since the 1960s, whereas children’s books are a relatively new feature, the first such title having appeared in 2002. Nearly all their children’s books have won awards, and many have been translated into other languages.
