Paul Zsolnay Verlag

The Paul Zsolnay Verlag was founded in 1924. Between 1924 and 1933 it published some 950 titles, consisting mostly of German-language and international belles-lettres. Within a short period of time the Paul Zsolnay Verlag evolved into one of the main publishing houses in the German-speaking lands. After decades of vicissitudes and several changes of ownership, the Zsolnay Verlag was acquired in 1996 by the Carl Hanser Verlag in Munich with a view to reconnecting it to the great literary traditions of its early years. It publishes classics and collected works, literary detective novels, and a broad range of non-fiction books relating to politics and the history of ideas. The younger generation of today is represented by writers such as Birgit Birnbacher, winner of the 2019 Bachmann Prize, and the linguistic virtuoso Elias Hirschl. Zsolnay’s distinguished literary traditions are echoed in re-editions, and in some cases even original editions, of books by Alfred Polgar, Stefan Zweig, Ernst Lothar, Ludwig Winder, Arthur Schnitzler and Hertha Pauli.
