Ilija Trojanow was born in 1965 in Sofia, Bulgaria. In 1971 he fled with his parents to Germany via Yugoslavia and Italy, and was granted political asylum in Munich. A year later, his family moved to Kenya, where Trojanow lived until 1984. From 1984-1989 he studied Law and Ethnology in Munich. In 1998 he moved to Mumbai, in 2003 to Kapstadt. He currently lives in Vienna as a writer, translator and publisher.
