Helmut Dubiel was born in Essen in 1946 and studied philosophy and German literature at the universities of Bielefeld and Bochum. Currently he is professor of sociology at the University of Giessen. He has traveled extensively and held guest professorships at the University of California, Berkeley, New York University and the University of Florence, Italy, among others. He lives in Frankfurt.
