Manfred Schneider, born in 1944, studied Germanic and Romance languages as well as philosophy in Freiburg. In 1971 he completed his Ph.D. dissertation under the supervision of Gerhard Kaiser on Destruktion und utopische Gemeinschaft. Zur Thematik und Dramaturgie des Heroischen im Werk Christian Dietrich Grabbes. [Destruction and Utopian Community: On the Thematics and Dramaturgy of the Heroic in the Works of Christian Dietrich Grabbe.]
After his habilitation in 1981 he was appointed professor of modern German literature at the University of Essen. Since 1999 he holds the chair in “Modern German Literature, Aesthetics, and Media” at the Ruhr University in Bochum.
