Michael Hagner, born in 1960, studied medicine and philosophy at the Free University of Berlin, then worked at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. He completed his postdoctoral degree in medicine at the University of Göttingen in 1994. Since 2003 he has been professor of science studies at Swiss Technical University (ETH Zurich).
