Joseph Croitoru, born 1960 in Haifa, studied history, art history and Jewish studies in Jerusalem and Freiburg, and gained his doctorate with a thesis on the history of assassination through suicide. He works as an author and freelance journalist. Since the early 1990s he has written regularly for the feature pages of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Neue Zürcher Zeitung, focusing chiefly on the Middle East and Eastern Europe. He lives near Freiburg.
