Who decides what is ugly and what is not? And why are we so afraid of being ugly? An invitation to look at ourselves differently, against all aesthetic norms and the burden of oppression, dehumanisation and patriarchy that they entail.

Moshtari Hilal is a German-Afghan artist and author. She is co-founder of the collective AVAH (Afghan Visual Arts and History). Hässlichkeit was published by Hanser Verlag in 2023.
