Can we do it? – Children’s and young adult literature in German and Arabic focusing on the experience of fleeing and forced migration.

Podiumsdiskussion auf der Frankfurter Buchmesse 2017

Frankfurt

The continual influx of refugees has turned the subject of migration and integration into the most crucial social issue of our era, and it is reflected in today’s literature for children and young people.

The panel will discuss forms of representation and methods of communicating the subject of migration to children and young adults in Germany and the Arabic world. Barbara Warning’s most recent book, Heimisch und doch fremd, features young adults reporting about the various paths that brought them to Germany and their diverse experiences once they arrived. Mahmoud Hassanein is, among other things, "the Arabic voice" of Kirsten Boie’s bilingual children's book Bestimmt wird alles gut.

Participants:
Barbara Warning (Germany), journalist and author of books for young adults
Mahmoud Hassanein (Germany), translator
Moderator: Anne-Dore Krohn (Germany), editor and literary critic

The Syrian children's book author and translator Suleman Taufiq has kindly agreed to step in for Mahmoud Hassanein, who had to cancel due to illness. We are very grateful to him for joining on such short notice!
