The author Meral Kureyshi will discuss her novel "Elephants in the Garden" and the recently published Arabic translation of it with critic Sayed Mahmoud at the Cairo Book Fair in 2018. Supported by a grant from Litrix.de, the novel was translated into Arabic by Ola Adel and published in 2018 by al-Arabi Verlag, Cairo.
Meral Kureyshi’s debut novel tells the story of a family of Turkish descent that had fled from Kosovo to Switzerland in the 1990s. The young protagonist attempts to find a place where she feels at home in the new city and new language, and realizes that with every new word she learns, she moves further away from her mother and the old life and world she embodies. In this tightly woven novel, Meral Kureyshi comes to terms with her own family’s story. What do words like origin and alienation mean in a life shaped by migration?
Meral Kureyshi, born1983 in Prizren (formerly Yugoslavia), has been living in Bern since 1992. Her debut novel "Elephants in the Garden" was nominated for the Swiss Book Prize in 2015.
