On the refugee trail through Europe

Navid Kermani: Einbruch der Wirklichkeit. C. H. Beck

In interviews with aid workers, politicians, and above all refugees, the author Navid Kermani reports in his newest work, "Einbruch der Wirklichkeit" (2015) on the situation and experiences of thousands of refugees on the Balkan route. Kermani will present his book together with the Egyptian author Ezzat al-Kamhawy (Egypt) and the translator Nermine al-Sharkawy (Egypt), and talk to them about what it means to be forced to flee one's homeland and the specific possibilities literary journalism offers.

"Einbruch der Wirklichkeit" was published in Arabic translation by Sefsafa Publishing House, Cairo in 2018 with support from Litrix.de.

Navid Kermani, born 1967, studied Islamic Studies, Philosophy and Theatre Studies in Cologne, Cairo and Bonn and earned a post-doctoral degree as an Orientalist. He lives as a freelance writer in Cologne.

Ezzat el Kamhawi, born 1961, studied journalism at Cairo University and is an Egyptian author and journalist.

Nermine al-Sharkawy is junior professor for German Literature at the Al-Alsun Faculty, Ain Shams University, and freelance translator.
