Esther Kinsky in conversation with Vincenzo Latronico
On 6 May 1976 the Friuli region was hit by a massive earthquake that devastated the
physical environment as well as the lives of its inhabitants. People from a valley in the
extreme north-east of the region relive their experience of the disaster. Friuli is an area full
of legends, and the earthquake quickly came to be associated with the monstrous fabled
creature Orcolat and with Faron the Water Dragon, a mighty siren-mermaid with two tails.
Counterposed to the human voices that speak of an ancient order of things suddenly
thrown into turmoil by fear, are the voices of nature as expressed in the harsh karst landscape of the area. Rombo tells of the fragility of existence and of the deep power of
remembrance, which serves to point the contrast between that which has been destroyed for ever, and that which still remains.
