Meet the author
Antje Rávik Strubel in conversation with her translator Cristina Vezzaro
After growing up close to the Czech-Polish border, young Adine leaves her small village to go and study in Berlin. She gets to know a woman photographer there, and her personality begins to evolve. After suffering a serious sexual assault she flees to Helsinki, where she tries to rebuild her life together with Leonides, a political activist and a member of the European Parliament. But while there she unexpectedly re-encounters the man who raped her, and the horror she suffered in the past comes back to haunt her. Perhaps running away is not enough to enable us to forget bad experiences.
