Guest visit of Jens Balzer to Bookcity, Milan
A special event under the auspices of the Goethe Institute in association with Bookcity Milan, Castelvecchi, and Litrix.de
Culture always entails appropriation, and in his brilliant essay Ethik der Appropriation, Jens Balzer argues for an appropriation process that is critical of power and the ways it is exercised, but also fully self-aware. In this 87-page, eminently readable essay, the journalist and pop theorist Jens Balzer maintains that culture has always involved appropriation and transformation. However, he demonstrates that it is also possible to appropriate the Other in different ways – by aiming not to achieve absolute purity and authenticity, but seeking instead to lay bare the nature of power relationships. In his view it is a matter of replacing the current forbiddance-based approach with better appropriation procedures, thereby arriving at a new ethic of appropriation that may provide the basis for a truly enlightened awareness of one’s own identity.
Ethik der Appropriation was published by Matthes & Seitz, Berlin, in 2022. Thanks to a grant from the Litrix.de Translation Support Programme, which is targeted at Italian from 2022 to 2024, the book has been published in 2023 by Castelvecchi in the translation by Massimo De Pascale under the title Etica dell’appropriazione. The author Jens Balzer is undertaking a reading tour in Italy with the Italian edition of his book, presenting it in Milan and Naples
