Peter Eigen, born 1938 in Augsburg, studied law in Erlangen and in Frankfurt, where he earned a doctorate. He began working for the World Bank in 1968, first in the United States, then in Africa and South America. From 1988 to 1993 he was Director of the World Bank’s regional mission in East Africa. In 1993 he founded Transparency International, an NGO working for increased transparency and accountability around the world, and served as its chairman until 2005.
