Andreas Tönnesmann, born in 1953, studied art history and literature at German and Italian universities. As of 1991 he was professor of architectural history, first at the University of Bonn, then at the University of Augsburg. In 2001 he accepted a chair at the renowned Institute of Art and Architectural History at Swiss Technical University (ETH Zurich) He was also named honorary professor at the University of Basel in 2002. His research focus was European art and architecture of the Renaissance and the modern era. He died in 2014 in Munich.
