cbt (Bertelsmann) Verlag
The cbt Verlag has been in existence since 2008: in that year the paperback programme for young readers established by the cbj Verlag in 2001 was supplemented by a hardback programme. In 2014 the company was able to celebrate a major new development: as well as adding a children’s book programme for young readers aged 9 and upwards, the company also adopted a new logo and embraced new themes.
The books published by cbt embrace the entire assortment, from children’s history with black and white illustrations right through to novels for young adults. Special attention is paid to the tweenager group, i.e. 12- and 13-year-olds. The company has set itself the task of approaching the entire children’s book genre in a fresh, emotionally nuanced and unusual way. Not the least important aspect of this is that the publisher is thereby exploring new literary territory. cbt books put great emphasis on realistic narratives and concentrate on precisely those topics that most concern the young: friendship, love, identity, and the interplay between the generations. But thrillers, detective stories and variations on the fantastical all still have their place.
