Nilpferd began life in the autumn of 2001 as NP Buchverlag's imprint for children and young adults and soon established itself in the German-speaking world, proving instantly popular with readers and book professionals alike. The books combine thought-provoking and sophisticated texts with artwork that explores new ways of using images to reflect on themes and content. In January 2006 Nilpferd – or 'hippo' as it would be known in English – found a new home at Residenz Verlag, leading to the creation of Nilpferd in Residenz ('the hippo in residence'). But in spite of the changes, the 'hippo' still stands for books that aren't afraid to be different and that challenge young readers.
