How do publishers, literary agents and translators interact with each other?

What role do literary agents play in representing their authors abroad and in negotiating foreign rights for their work? What is the nature of the relationship between literary agents and a publisher’s Foreign Rights department? When and in what way do translators become involved in the process of negotiating foreign rights? How common is it for literary agents and publishers to propose a specific translator for a book written by one of their authors? What opportunities are there for translators to involve themselves in the negotiations between their agents and the publisher in question? And to what extent can translation support schemes have a sustained beneficial impact on literary exchange between different languages and cultures?

These and other associated topics concerning the relationship between translators and publishers will be discussed at the third event in the ‘Art of Translation’ seminar series – and it is no coincidence that this seminar will be taking place on 30 September, International Translation Day.

SPEAKERS, CHAIR PERSON
The discussants are Evangelia Avloniti (literary agent, Ersilia Literary Agency), Christoph Hassenzahl (Suhrkamp-Verlag Foreign Rights manager; responsibilities include Greece) and Andreas Sideris (publisher, political scientist, Vice-President of the Hellenic Foundation for Culture). The discussion will be chaired by the translator and literary critic Marina Agathangelidou.

OVERVIEW In the second part of the seminar the speakers will answer questions from the audience, who are cordially invited to pose questions and express their own views on the various topics.
The seminar will conclude with a general discussion.
