Ilija Trojanow was born in 1965 in Sofia, Bulgaria. In 1971 he fled with his parents to Germany via Yugoslavia and Italy, and was granted political asylum in Munich. A year later, his family moved to Kenya, where Trojanow lived until 1984. He later studied law and ethnology in Munich. In the early 1990s, Trojanow travelled through Africa. In 1998 he moved to Mumbai. Since 2003 he has lived in South Africa as a writer, translator and publisher.
