Christoph Hein, born 1944 in Lower Silesia, grew up after the war in Bad Düben near Leipzig. He studied Philosophy and Logic in Berlin and Leipzig from 1967-1971. After completing his studies he worked as a dramaturge and playwright at the Volksbühne in East Berlin. He has been a freelance writer of fiction and of stage and radio plays since 1979.
