Tropen Verlag

Tropen was founded in 1996 as one of Germany’s first independent publishers. When the publishers Michael Zöllner and Tom Kraushaar took over Klett-Cotta in 2008 they decided to continue the Tropen imprint. Compared to the traditional approach previously adopted by Klett-Cotta they focus much more strongly on contemporary themes. The circumstances of today, however, have thrown many issues into question: the relationship between the sexes, and between humankind and nature; the relationship between the rich and the poor; the role of artificial intelligence; colonialism; the inequality between East and West; and the conditions determining war and peace. These factors play a central role in Tropen’s books; but that does not mean that its assortment doesn’t also offer literature and detective stories, which are well written and fun to read. Since 2019 the list produced by the Berlin branch under Tom Müller has enhanced the company’s profile by offering international stars such as Bernardine Evaristo, Hallgrímur Helgason and Bernie Sanders, plus German writers such as Luisa Neubauer and Lady Bitch Ray, Max Strohe, Simon Strauß and Arno Frank.
