mareverlag

In the mid-1990s the Swiss marine biologist Nikolaus Gelpke founded a publishing house with a view to producing a periodical unlike any other. Gelpke has a long history of sailing the high seas and doing marine research. April 1997 saw the first edition of the periodical mare. Die Zeitschrift der Meere. Ever since then a new edition has appeared every two months looking at the sea in new ways and above all with infinite curiosity. The marebuchverlag was founded in 2001 and presented its first list at the 2002 Frankfurt Book Fair, offering belles-lettres, non-fiction, stories of thrilling adventures at sea, cultural history and mind-blowing novels. It remains the aspiration of the company – which since 2008 has traded in conjunction with its journal under the name ‘mareverlag’ – for every one of its books to be regarded as a jewel, not least in respect of its design values. It seeks to promote not only what is new, but it also publishes classic works either for the first time or else in new translations, including works by writers such as Jack London, Guy de Maupassant, Arthur Conan Doyle, Robert Louis Stevenson and Mercè Rodoreda.
