Rüdiger Safranski, born in 1945, studied philosophy, German literature and art history. He worked as a research assistant at the Free University of Berlin, after which he served as co-publisher and editor of Berliner Hefte. Safranski later worked as an adult-education teacher. Since 1987 he has been a freelance writer in Berlin. In 2001 he became a member of the German Academy of Language and Literature in Darmstadt.
