Founded in 1763, C.H. Beck is one of Germany’s biggest and most famous publishing houses. Under the general headings of ‘Literature – Non-fiction – Science’ the main areas of focus include history in its various forms, via religion and philosophy, politics and social studies, literature and linguistics, right through to art and architecture. C.H. Beck uses an equally broad range of different ways of presenting its material. The bulk of their assortment consists of books, biographies, picture books, popular paperbacks and self-help books aimed at the general reader, but the range also includes scholarly monographs, multi-volume reference books, lexica, encyclopaedias and academic course-books, along with publications on the fringes of literature such as essays, autobiographical documents, collections of letters, not to mention anthologies, collections of poetry and editions of literary classics. Beck’s historiographical assortment. The company is always at pains to attract the very best experts and writers. Translations of outstanding foreign authors are routinely commissioned. The overall assortment is organised into a variety of series, which together lend it a distinctive profile. C.H. Beck is a serious scholarly publisher, but certainly not a purely academic one.
